Webb3 sep. 2015 · Rust bluing is a great method. It's much more durable than the hot salts bluing. All the older Lugers, etc. were rust blued. It was cheaper and faster to use the hot tank method so gun makers went that route. It is labor intensive. I had very good results with Brownells' rust blue solution. But no one wants to take a week or more to rust blue a gun so a quick dip in hot salts gives a finish almost as good in a fraction of the time.

As for cost, projects like these don't really become cost effective unless you do it more than twice. I did buy new bluing solution. I'll be going with Laurel Mountain Forge this time around.
