To place half walls, you can either draw, enclose, or replace current walls. Making a room with half walls creates a floor, but does not create a ceiling. To do deactivate the grid I think you need to use Alt, not Ctrl. CTRL+F does not do anything in any mode, and ALT does not work for building walls and placing windows and doors.
